Delco food safety inspections: Evidence of rodents hanging out at the bar, and in a kitchen

Food safety inspections of restaurants with liquor licenses in the past week and only those with violations, by the Delaware County Health Department:

Chester Pizzeria, 34 E. Seventh St., Chester:

• Hand washing sink blocked by box.

• Deli slicer is not clean to sight and touch.

• Date marking is not on any open food in facility.

• Unapproved pest control products observed by back door

• Food stored uncovered on walk-in cooler.

• Observed wiping cloths stored on cutting boards/counter tops, not stored in sanitizing solution between use.

• Soil residue present on stand mixer underneath and on shield.

• The women's restroom lacks a covered receptacle for disposal of feminine hygiene products.

• Unnecessary items/non-functional equipment found in the back room of facility.

• Ceiling tiles missing in room behind oven

• [Floors, Walls and Ceilings] in the food facility were found in a state of disrepair, or not to be smooth and easily cleanable.

Fresh Grocer of Upper Darby, 421 S. 69th St., Upper Darby:

• Food employee used bare hands to handle ready-to-eat foods.

• A sign or poster that notifies food employees to wash their hands is not provided at all handwashing sinks used by food employees.

• Observed chicken in contact with soiled tray rack

• Temperature of hot water used for immersion sanitation at 95 degrees.

• Food stored in an unapproved location on floor in walk in

• Slash-resistant gloves are in direct contact with ready to eat foods, used by employee.

• Mop was found stored incorrectly in-between use.

Overbrook Golf Club – Main Dining, 799 Godfrey Road, Villanova:

• A sign or poster that notifies food employees to wash their hands is not provided at all handwashing sinks used by food employees.

• Liquid hand soap not provided at the hand washing sink.

• Disposable paper towels not provided at the hand washing sink.

• Raw beef stored above ready-to-eat foods (cooked brisket).

• Mixed grill soda gun nozzles are not clean to sight and touch.

• Ice cream scoop food contact surface is soiled with crystallized oxidization residue.

• In-use utensils (tongs) are stored incorrectly on oven handles.

• Common bowl, or scoop without a handle, observed in direct contact with bulk food items.

• Gaskets on the walk-in cooler doors are damaged and soiled.

• Test kits or other devices are not available to the employees to measure sanitizing solution concentration of sink and surface sanitizer.

• Ceiling vents in the food prep area were found with accumulation of dust on them.

The Blue Elephant Restaurant, 110 N. Wayne Ave., Wayne:

• Employee observed eating in the food preparation area.

• Handwashing sink blocked by cleaning wipes in the first floor bar area.

• Raw beef stored above ready-to-eat foods (sauce).

• Employee cellphone observed stored on cutting board.

• Working spray bottle container of cleaner not properly labeled in the first floor bar area.

• Raw fish and animal proteins are stored in reduced oxygen packaging.

• Visible evidence of rodent activity present in the second floor bar area.

• Preset tableware is not protected from contamination.

• Gaskets on the walk-in cooler door are damaged.

• Employee personal items (cellphone) were found stored improperly on cutting board.

The Inn at Villanova University, 601 County Line Road, Wayne:

• A sign or poster that notifies food employees to wash their hands is not provided at all handwashing sinks used by food employees.

• Liquid hand soap not provided at the handwashing sink.

• Disposable paper towels not provided at the handwashing sink.

• Hot water sanitizing rinse at dish machine is less than 180 degrees.

• Proteins are preserved with reduced oxygen packaging.

• Exterior loading dock door may allows access for pests.

• Visible evidence of rodent activity (mouse droppings) observed in the food prep and warewashing areas.

• Preset Tableware is not protected from contamination.

• Microwave in the cafe does not meet ANSI/NSF sanitation standards.

• Flooring tiles in the food prep area were found in a state of disrepair, or not to be smooth and easily cleanable.

Truth Social Lounge, 700 W. Second St., Chester:

• Disposable paper towels not provided at the hand washing sink in kitchen.

• Date marking not in use in facility.

• Unapproved can of Raid observed under triple sinks at bar.

• Chicken and fish is thawing at room temperature on counter.

• Exterior door by pool table allows access for pests.

• Food stored in an unapproved location (bag of onions on floor).

• In-use cutting board at sandwich station observed with deep gouges and heavy staining.

• Soil residue present on fryers and floors under fryers.

• Grease was found dripping from the components of the exhaust ventilation hood system.

There were only a total of nine inspections for the week.

None of the townships that are conducting their own inspections have posted to the state Department of Agriculture website.

Most of the violations are cleared up on the spot, but some require follow-up visits.
